Did you know there are awards for best public bathrooms? Oh, I'm not talking about a "clean" award. These are awards for making your restroom experience truly unique. There are the "Golden Plunger" awards for beautiful bathrooms all over the world (to see some of the winners, follow this clue). And then there's the "World's Best See Through Bathrooms" category. I know this because I've been to one of the winners for Best See Through Bathrooms. Take a closer look at the photo to the left. See the toilet? The window I'm behind looks out into the ice cream parlor, (Sloan's Ice Cream Parlor in West Palm Beach, Florida, to be specific). Mystified? Who would want to use this restroom? Here's how it works. You go in and close the door, thinking maybe some curtains will suddenly drop over the windows...but none do. However, when you turn the lock on the door, the glass panes instantly turn opaque so that you can't see out and, more importantly, no one else can see in. (As a side note, I still did not feel comfortable using this restroom, particularly while accompanied by my two-and-a-half foot shadow who could reach the lock. But wouldn't I have had a great "embarrassing moment" story, then? It was almost worth the risk.) The best explanation I've found for how this magic window works is this: "The door lock turns on a light that shines at an angle and the special glass frosts over." I know--not much of an explanation, is it? "Special glass" and "at an angle". So it remains a mystery. At least to me. For better photos of these bathrooms, follow this clue.
Oh, and P.S.--the ice cream is delicious as well! Okay, now I will do my best to refrain from toilet topics for awhile.
That is crazy! I once visited a home with a shower where one of the walls was glass. The house was built into a hill and the glass shower wall looked out onto a mossy, fern covered wall of hillside that descended steeply to the base of the home and the glass wall. I guess it would have been very difficult for someone to get back there, maybe even impossible, but still...ugh.
